Heather Schwartz

Practice Specialist

Heather Schwartz works with school leaders and teams of teachers on effective implementation of CASEL’s systemic SEL model.

Before coming to CASEL Heather worked as an instructional coach on Chicago’s southwest side. In this role she worked directly with teachers to help them create intellectually active and engaging learning experiences for students. She also worked with the school’s leadership team to conceive of and implement improvements to school culture. Heather also helped to pioneer peer tutoring and a middle school advisory program, along with the use of Document-Based Questions in the middle grades. Before becoming a coach, Heather taught seventh-grade language arts and social studies. She was trained in both Facing History and Ourselves and Developmental Designs.

Heather earned her bachelor’s in African-American Studies from Oberlin and a master’s in communications from Northwestern. Recently she completed a master’s in educational leadership at Columbia University Teachers College. She is a certified yoga teacher and is trained to lead mindfulness classes for grades K-12 through Mindful Schools.

Heather aspires to contribute to a more just society by supporting SEL in schools.
