Social and Emotional Learning in Action

To reach young people in all aspects of their lives, SEL is implemented in many different settings. Most important, and a primary focus of CASEL's work, is SEL in schools, ranging from prekindergarten to 12th grade. A growing body of research supports the idea that developing students'  social and emotional competence is essential for academic and life success, and a variety of evidence-based programs and practices are available for use in schools and classrooms.

In addition to Pre-K-12 education, CASEL supports several initiatives that are helping to advance SEL in a comprehensive approach that includes schools, families, communities, and teacher pre-service education programs. Each section described briefly on this page links to other pages on our website that offer more information, details, videos, and descriptions of effective examples of SEL in action.

Collaborating Districts Initiative

Given the importance of district-level leadership and coordination, in 2011 CASEL launched a national initiative aimed at supporting districts’ capacities to promote SEL for all students. Learn more about the Collaborating Districts Initiative (CDI).

CASEL/DuPage Regional Office of Education (ROE) Partnership

Initiated in 2010 with support from CASEL and NoVo Foundation, the CASEL/DuPage ROE Partnership includes 12 school districts in DuPage County, Ill., which encompasses the southwestern Chicago suburbs. This partnership is an approach to providing services and support to school districts that want to implement SEL districtwide but lack the resources to go to scale. The partnership has created a highly effective professional learning community.

Youth Voice

Providing opportunities for young people to participate actively in improving their schools and communities is one of the keys to effective social and emotional learning, especially at the middle and high school levels. Youth Voice involves giving young people a genuine voice and a meaningful role in decisions that affect their lives. CASEL's Youth Voice page is designed to highlight exemplary Youth Voice work across the country.
