ESSA’s Nonacademic Measure: What States Should Know About School Climate. (Oct. 2016)
The Education Policy Center at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) convened a panel of SEL and school climate experts from the fields of education, research, and journalism on November 1. CASEL Board Chair Tim Shriver was one of the speakers who offered suggestions to help policymakers address the requirements of ESSA for nonacademic measures of student performance.

Grantmakers: Embracing the Whole Child
CASEL President and CEO Karen Niemi was a panelist at the Grantmakers for Education preconference session on Embracing the Whole Child held October 25. Karen discussed CASEL’s Collaborating Districts Initiative (CDI) model, specifically how to work with districts, achieve outcomes, and support and expand the work, showing grantmakers a tangible way to invest in SEL.

Conversation on SEL Conference
CASEL President and CEO Karen Niemi presented at the Conversation on Social Emotional Learning: Why Students Need It and What Districts are Doing About it on October 13. The event was hosted by NoVo Foundation and Education First. Karen addressed questions about SEL that included evolving definitions of SEL and growing momentum for SEL nationally and within states.

First Book Collection
CASEL has worked with First Book to curate and launch two special book collections about SEL. Titled “Healthy feelings and relationships,” the collections provide readers with resources and downloadable tip sheets in English and Spanish. Learn more.

Equity Work Group
On October 12, CASEL, in collaboration with leaders from the Partner Districts, held the first meeting for the newly launched Equity Work Group. The goal of the group is to build relationships, establish a definition of equity, and create the resources and professional development to sustain this effort.

Facebook InspirED Summit
CASEL partnered with Facebook and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to host the 2016 InspirED Social and Emotional Learning Summit on October 7. A senior staff advisor at CASEL presented on CASEL’s Collborating Districts Initiative and what is emerging within SEL. Learn more.

Education Writers Association Roundtable
CASEL Chief Knowledge Officer Roger Weissberg spoke with journalists about the impact of ESSA on SEL at the Education Writers Association roundtable held October 6. Roger fielded questions related to the definition of SEL and SEL looks like in districts and schools.

Announcements, Presentations, and Events

Assessment Work Group (Nov. 2016)
On November 9-10 the Assessment Work Group met to discuss the ongoing development of tools and resources to support the practical assessment of social and emotional learning. This collaborative group is part of a three-year effort led by CASEL and collaborators from CORE, Harvard, RAND Corporation, Rush University, and Transforming Education, along with other leading researchers, policymakers, and educators.

United Way Education Summit (Nov. 2016)
Jo Salazar, CASEL’s manager of practice, led a workshop about CASEL’s work in Chicago’s Marshall Square neighborhood as part of the Nov. 3 Chicago United Way Education Summit. The session highlighted how SEL is a proactive approach for students who may experience or already have experienced trauma. Speakers from CASEL’s Supportive School Communities Project presented on how implementing systemic SEL in four pilot schools is helping students to be resilient.

Schoolwide Implementation of SEL (Nov. 2016)
On Nov. 4 CASEL Senior SEL Consultant Ruth Cross and Senior District Consultant Dierdre Farmbry presented at the Nebraska School Counselor Association conference. Their topic was “Implementing SEL Schoolwide.”
